Ten years on the frame

Care and guarantee

Every frame that leaves the workshop is stamped with a number and written into the book with its timber and date. If a joint opens in normal use inside ten years we collect the chair, take it apart, re-joint it and bring it back.

What is covered

  • Joints opening, loosening or failing in domestic or contract use
  • A leg, rail or stretcher splitting along the grain
  • Seat platforms and webbing giving way under normal weight
  • Collection and return carriage in mainland Britain while we have the chair
  • Frames still covered when the chair changes hands, as long as the number is legible

What is not

  • Timber moving, darkening or changing colour, which every board does
  • Marks, dents, ring stains and worn finish from ordinary use
  • Fabric and leather wear, staining or fading
  • Chairs stored outdoors, in a garage, or next to a radiator turned up hard
  • Damage from a repair somebody else has already attempted

Looking after them

Hard wax oil

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it off. When water stops beading on the arms, rub a thin coat of hard wax oil in with a lint free rag and leave it overnight. No stripping, no sanding.

every 12 to 18 months

Matt lacquer

Warm water and a neutral cleaner. Keep bleach and alcohol gel off it. Chips are patched in the workshop rather than at home.

as needed

Saddle leather

Dust it, and feed it with a clear leather cream twice a year. It will darken where people sit, which is the point of it.

twice a year

Wool seats

Vacuum with the brush head, blot spills straight away and never rub them. Drop-in seats lift out for a proper clean.

monthly

The room itself

Timber is happiest between 40 and 60 per cent humidity. A chair left in front of a radiator all winter will shrink and tell you about it.

all year

If something goes wrong

Step one

Turn the chair over and find the stamp under the seat: frame number, timber and date. Photograph it, and the fault.

Step two

Email both photographs to [email protected] or ring 0161 236 7716. We look the number up in the book the same day.

Step three

We arrange collection, do the work in the workshop, usually within three weeks, and bring the chair back.

Work outside the guarantee is charged plainly: re-oiling a chair in the workshop from £38, re-covering a drop-in seat from £64 plus fabric, re-jointing a frame we did not make from £95 after we have seen it. Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 sit alongside all of this and are set out in the terms.
